Do you know who will make health care decisions for you if you can’t? Or why everyone should have a Health Care Proxy? October is national Health Care Proxy Month, making it the perfect time to learn what you can do now to ensure your health care wishes are known by your family and physician. Niagara Hospice will host an Advance Care Planning program on Thursday, October 25 to help ensure your health care wishes are followed. Cheryl Ferguson, BSW, MSW and Niagara Hospice Medical Social Worker will explain Health Care Proxies (HCP), Living Wills, Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) orders and Medical Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment (MOLST).
“By learning more about Advance Directives, our community can have thoughtful conversations about their healthcare decisions and complete reliable advance directives to make their wishes known,” said Ferguson. “Fewer families and healthcare providers will have to struggle with making difficult healthcare decisions in the absence of guidance from the patient, and healthcare providers and facilities will be better equipped to address advance healthcare planning issues before a crisis and be better able to honor patient wishes when the time comes to do so.”
Held at the Niagara Hospice Administration Building at 4675 Sunset Drive in Lockport, the program will start promptly at 3-4:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required by leaving a message at 280-0742 by October 24. Free forms and refreshments will be available.
