New Grant Funding for Town of Cheektowaga Aims to Improve Trails to Improve Lives
Great American Trails grant program highlights benefits of trails
The Town of Cheektowaga has been selected as a Great American Trails grant recipient from the Darden Foundation and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).
Cheektowaga is one of eight communities awarded this grant in 2013. LongHorn Steakhouse, part of the Darden family of restaurants, operates more than 400 restaurants across the country and will engage their restaurant teams in this effort locally.
Local parks and trails are important community resources supporting conservation and environmental sustainability efforts. In Cheektowaga, the Losson Nature Trail System in Stiglmeier Park provides 5.2miles of interrelated natural and man-made features that cater to a diversity of users.
“We are extremely fortunate to be provided the opportunity to enhance what is already considered one of the “jewels” of our Town’s park system,” says Ellen Fischer, Director of the Cheektowaga Youth & Recreation Department.
Through the Great American Trails program the Cheektowaga Conservation Corps will purchase and install new interpretive signage within the system of 15 trails that will highlight specific trail information, improve safety and enhance the overall experience for thousands of nature lovers.
“At LongHorn, we believe in hard work and doing things the right way, part of which means giving back to the local communities we serve,” says David Plevin, Director of Operations. “Guests visit us to spend time with family and friends, and what better way to extend this idea beyond our restaurant than by providing support to help refurbish outdoor, public spaces for families to enjoy.”
Trails across the United States contribute to a more interconnected community and foster active modes of transportation such as walking and biking. By their very nature, trails also protect and sustain open spaces– making communities more livable and improving the quality of life.
