Memory Minders Program Enhancing Lives in Niagara County
Rachel, who lives with her daughter and son-in-law, spent most days in her pajamas. The television was always on, and the days began running together. Her daughter Karen noticed a decline in Rachel’s memory and sought help from The Dale Association. Rachel, now enrolled and coming regularly to the agency’s Memory Minders program, gets excited about her new routine. She gets herself up and ready to attend Memory Minders, where she enjoys the activities and the friendships she’s made. Her kids and grandkids love hearing Rachel talk about her (now) active days and the fun things she’s done in Memory Minders. Her daughter is impressed by how much the program has motivated her mom and she finds great comfort in the knowledge that mom is surrounded by a caring group in a safe place. Memory Minders has been the start of a new chapter in Rachel’s life.
Memory Minders, is a social day program in Eastern Niagara County for adults with memory loss or early on-set dementia. New participants are welcome to join Mondays and/or Fridays from 10:00-2:00 at the program building at 33 Ontario Street, Lockport.
Program Coordinator, Angie Blackley, plans activities and support designed to slow the further deterioration of mild memory loss. “Our program is based on a proven model founded by The Brookdale Foundation. We do mind stimulating activities, we bake together, we plant flowers then tend to them, we listen to music, exercise, make seasonal projects and enjoy social outings. The peer support of the group, the activities we do and the socialization is so good for our participants and it really helps to stimulate memories”, says Blackley.
Memory Minders gives family members some much needed respite time during the week. “Mom loves coming to Memory Minders. And it’s the only time of day I don’t worry about her”, says Shirley, daughter of a participant.
The Dale Association is a non-profit human services agency providing supportive services for adults, mental health counseling for adults 18 and older, in-home care for people of all ages, and offers enrichment, travel, bingo, volunteer opportunities and more.
